Forty-one-year-old Eelco Eerenberg is to be the new State Secretary for Finance for D66, the party has announced. Nathalie van Berkel was originally slated for the position, but she withdrew her candidacy on Monday after several media outlets reported inaccuracies in her CV. Van Berkel subsequently announced her departure from the House of Representatives.
Eerenberg currently serves as an alderman in Utrecht, where his brief includes spatial planning, education, and public health. He previously served on the city council in Enschede, where he also studied. During his time there, he served first as a councillor and later as the alderman responsible for finance, economics, youth, and education. He has twice been named “best young local administrator” by the magazine Binnenlands Bestuur.
