GroenLinks-PvdA refuses to negotiate on raising retirement age

Share

GroenLinks-PvdA says it will not enter talks on accelerating the rise in the state pension age, a key plan of the minority government formed by D66, VVD, and CDA. Party leader Jesse Klaver delivered the warning on Wednesday during the parliamentary debate on the government’s policy statement. “Take this off the table,” he urged, calling on the cabinet to drop the proposal.

Under the current rules, the state pension age increases by eight months for every extra year of life expectancy. According to the coalition agreement, the government wants this to change from 2033. From then on, the pension age would rise by one full year for every additional year that life expectancy grows.

Opposition to the measure extends beyond GroenLinks-PvdA. Many other opposition parties have also rejected the plan. The cabinet needs their support, as it holds no majority in either the House of Representatives or the Senate.
