The vibrant and magical elegance of Indian dance forms came to life on Monday evening at the Muziekgebouw Eindhoven. An audience of approximately 300 people gathered to witness a magical performance presented by the Embassy of India. The programme merged the classical elegance of Kathak dance with the athletic strength of the Mayurbhanj Chhau martial art form. Together, they created a unique story through movement that captivated the local community.

The evening opened with Bhoomi, a production that paid tribute to India’s soul. Choreographed by the company’s director, Maitreyee Pahari, the performance celebrated 150 years of the patriotic song Vande Mataram. Through rhythmic sequences, the dancers portrayed the resilience of a civilisation spanning from the Himalayas to the oceans. The piece honoured India’s heritage and values of justice, liberty, and equality.
The second half of the evening featured Sufiana, a presentation focused on the mystical path of Sufism. Choreographed by Pahari, who has over 25 years of experience, the piece explored themes of universal love and surrender. The performance guided the audience through various spiritual states. It included segments that illustrated the human being as a finely spun shawl and the total union of the heart with the divine.

The dancers moved with mystical intensity to the verses of poets like Rumi and Kabir. The ten performers showcased great technical skill through lightning-fast pirouettes (chakkar) and vigorous leaps. The lighting, designed by Anoop Joshi, created a mystical atmosphere on stage, which enhanced the experience for everyone in the room.

The event was attended by several high-profile guests, including the Deputy Chief of Mission from the Indian Embassy, Ann Haokip, and the director of the Gandhi Centre, Krish Gupta. Local leaders also showed their support, including Albert Kivits, director of the Eindhoven Library, and Bert-Jan Woertman of Braventure. Several Eindhoven city councillors, including Miriam Frosi, Jorien Migchielsen, and Gisele Mambre, also joined the celebration. This highlighted the strong cultural ties between the city and its international residents. The event was made possible with the support of the Eindhoven Indian community consortium. (EICC).

Under the artistic leadership of Maitreyee Pahari, the Lokchhanda Cultural Unit delivered exceptional skill and artistry. The evening ended with a standing ovation, marking a moving celebration of rhythm and harmony in the heart of Eindhoven.
