Share

A large fire broke out early Tuesday morning in a retail premises on the Ferdinand Bolstraat in Amsterdam’s De Pijp district. Emergency services received the call shortly after 05:15, prompting a significant response that included a trauma helicopter. Although the fire devastated the shop, firefighters managed to declare the situation under control by 08:50.

The blaze resulted in several injuries and significant evacuations. Emergency workers transported five individuals to the hospital due to smoke inhalation, though their current conditions remain unknown. Additionally, one firefighter sustained hand burns during the operation and required hospital treatment. Paramedics also treated several other people at the scene for minor smoke exposure.

Because of the intensity of the fire, authorities evacuated approximately four apartments located above the shop. While residents waited, a nearby café provided temporary shelter. The safety region also advised local neighbours to close all windows and doors and switch off ventilation systems to avoid drifting smoke.

The specific cause of the fire remains unknown at this stage. Investigators will begin their assessment now that the fire is extinguished. It is currently unclear when the evacuated residents will be allowed to return to their homes or if they require long-term alternative accommodation.
