Lower gas consumption at stations, ProRail switches off heating more often

Share

Gas consumption at Dutch train stations has fallen by 60 percent over the past five years, according to ProRail. ProRail says the decline is mainly because heating is now used only when needed.

A spokesperson said stations used 184,000 cubic metres of gas last year, compared with 460,000 cubic metres in 2020. In 2015, consumption stood at 504,000 cubic metres. ProRail aims to make all stations completely gas‑free by 2030. The sharper drop reflects higher gas prices and a greater focus on sustainability.

Some buildings still require heating, such as those containing historical objects or those vulnerable to moisture. ProRail is looking into alternatives, including improved ventilation and infrared panels.

ProRail says its annual passenger survey shows that switching off the heating has “no noticeable effect on passenger appreciation.”
