More people in poverty due to Jetten cabinet policy

Share

The CPB Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis has calculated that the policies of the incoming Jetten cabinet will increase the number of people living in poverty. If policies remain unchanged, 2.5 per cent of the Dutch population will be living in poverty by 2030, but the plans of the coalition of D66, VVD, and CDA will increase that figure slightly to 2.7 per cent. According to Statistics Netherlands (CBS), 3.1 per cent of the population was living in poverty in 2024.

The increase is primarily due to higher taxes on work and lower benefits. Healthcare costs are also rising, particularly due to the higher excess and lower healthcare allowance.

According to the CPB, the number of people with a monthly income deficit of 10 per cent or less is increasing. The number of people in deep poverty is hardly changing, according to the CPB. The number of children in poverty remains the same, according to the CPB, partly due to higher amounts in the new child benefit scheme.
