Philips has reached a settlement in the United States following a legal dispute over a ventilator, a spokesperson for the healthcare technology firm confirmed following a report by the Eindhovens Dagblad. The lawsuit was brought by a relative who accused Philips of being responsible for her mother suffering burns five years ago when the medical device caught fire. Philips denies all liability.
According to Philips, there is no evidence that any of its products were involved in the incident. The company maintains it can prove the fire was caused by an external factor; however, it is unable to disclose these details due to a confidentiality agreement involving its subsidiary.
The litigation had been ongoing for several years. Given that legal proceedings in the US can be exceptionally costly, the matter was settled through a payment to the surviving relatives. Philips has declined to reveal the settlement amount.
A company spokesperson described the incident as a very sad and unfortunate situation, emphasizing that this was a private legal dispute with an individual and is entirely unrelated to any other matters. Philips has been under significant pressure in recent years due to a series of legal challenges stemming from a major recall of sleep apnoea devices, which began in 2021.
