More than 9.6 million people have received a blue envelope from the Tax and Customs Administration ‘Belastingdienst’. Belastingdienst is asking them to submit their 2025 income tax return. From 1 March, 7.1 million individuals and 2.5 million business owners are required to file a return. The deadline is 1 May.
That is slightly more than last year, when 9.4 million people received a letter: 6.9 million individuals and 2.5 million businesses. Belastingdienst says it cannot point to a single reason for the rise in the number of invitations.
People who have not received a letter may still need to file a return. “This can happen, for example, if someone has income that is not yet known to the Belastingdienst,” a spokesperson said. Filing a return is compulsory for anyone who owes more than 57 euros in tax.
The authority expects the first day to be busy. “It is possible that the maximum number of users will be logged in at the same time,” the spokesperson said. People who cannot log in are advised to try again later. Last year, more than 706,000 returns were submitted on the first day.
Anyone who files before 1 April will be told by 1 July whether they will receive a refund or need to pay additional tax. Belastingdienst also expects increased activity shortly before 1 April and 1 May.
As in previous years, help with filing is available both online and in person. Last year, more than 51,000 appointments were made for assistance, around 6,800 more than the year before. Most of the support was provided face to face, including on the Belastingdienst location.
