Caroline van der Plas has announced her decision to step down as the leader and parliamentary chair of the BBB. She will be succeeded by Henk Vermeer, a Member of Parliament and a close confidant who co-founded the party. Although she is relinquishing the leadership, Van der Plas will remain active within the House of Representatives as an MP.
The decision was reportedly made last summer, as Van der Plas sought to free herself from the heavy administrative burdens of leadership to better represent the interests of the countryside. This move comes as the BBB maintains a firm stance against the agricultural policies of the current D66, VVD, and CDA coalition. Her successor, Henk Vermeer, was a key figure during previous coalition negotiations and intends to maintain the party’s focus on common sense and socially conservative values.
Since its inception in 2021 as a one-person party, the BBB has experienced significant political shifts. After a major electoral surge in 2023, the party’s popularity has gradually declined following its entry into the cabinet. In the most recent elections, the party secured four seats, held by a team that includes high-profile figures like Mona Keijzer and Femke Wiersma. While the party’s roots remain in agricultural and nitrogen policy, it has increasingly expanded its focus to include cultural issues and asylum.
Looking ahead, the BBB is preparing to contest local council elections in 29 municipalities, including the capital, Amsterdam. However, the party will notably absent from the ballot in Deventer, which is Van der Plas’s own home town. This leadership transition marks a new chapter for the party as it attempts to stabilise its influence in the face of shifting voter sentiment.
