Activist group Dolle Mina releases carnival song against transgressive behaviour

Share

The Eindhoven feminist group Dolle Mina Eindhoven has released a carnival song titled “Nie Graaie Mar Zwaaie” (“Don’t grab, just wave”). The track is designed to ensure the carnival is fun and safe for everyone. Under the name Dolle Mina Lampegat, the group is drawing attention to inappropriate and boundary-crossing behaviour during the festivities. The message is clear: partying is fine, but keep your hands to yourself. The song is an upbeat sing-along, performed in the local Eindhoven dialect.

Barbara Vugs wrote the lyrics together with Eindhoven musicians. “We wanted to write a funny carnival song you can really party to, while at the same time drawing attention to the fact that during carnival it often seems as if many men think they have a free license to grope, or ‘graaie’ in Eindhoven dialect,” Vugs said.

The song is performed by Odet Rosenkrantz, who is also entering it in Omroep Brabant’s “Kies je Kraker” (Pick your hit) competition. On 2 February it will be announced whether the song goes through to the next round.
