Bonfires were lit in several parts of the Netherlands on Sunday evening as part of Easter traditions. Around Holten in the province of Overijssel, local communities compete each year to build the most impressive bonfire, although in the past the focus was on building the tallest one. This year’s winner was Espelo.
Regional broadcaster RTV Oost aired a live report as the bonfire in Espelo was lit. Bonfires were also set alight in other areas throughout the evening, including in Gelderland, Drenthe, Groningen and Friesland. Some bonfires were already lit on Saturday, and more are planned for Monday.
The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) said earlier this week that little nuisance from smoke is expected.
