Brussels calls on member states to consider winter gas supplies

Share

Member states should begin preparing their gas reserves for next winter, the European Commission has warned. The call comes as the conflict in the Middle East raises concerns about supplies.

Europe still depends on gas imports that pass through the Strait of Hormuz. The Commission is therefore urging governments to start refilling storage sites “in a coordinated and timely manner”.

Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen said the EU is in a stronger position than during the 2022 energy crisis caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Even so, he stressed the need for early action. He hopes that refilling reserves now will ease pressure on prices and prevent a late‑summer rush. “In these difficult times, we must do everything we can to protect our citizens and businesses,” he said.
