Carnival: Waalre’s traditional mock wedding

Share

Esther and Leon have been joined in a “mock marriage” in Waalre, following the long-standing carnival tradition of the (boerenbruiloft) — peasant wedding. While the ceremony is usually a theatrical union between two acquaintances, this year features a unique twist: the couple are actually married in real life.

The decision to take part was a family affair. Esther explained that her parents-in-law held the same role eight years ago. Since then, her children have repeatedly asked their parents to follow suit. After nearly a decade of requests, the couple finally agreed to lead the festivities.

The ‘peasant wedding’ (boerenbruiloft) is a centuries-old tradition in which participants stage a mock wedding during the carnival season. Organisers explain that the custom originated when farmers wanted to celebrate carnival but lacked the funds for elaborate costumes. Instead, they would put on their best work clothes and pretend to get married, which would lead to a large community celebration.

Although the wedding contract is not legally binding, the event serves a serious purpose in the community. It brings together various carnival associations from across the village. The organisers note that while the focus is on the couple, the true value lies in bringing local groups together to celebrate as one.

For Esther, the event is about more than just a party. She sees it as a way to strengthen the ties between the local associations and the areas of Aalst and Waalre. Guests at the event shared this sentiment, noting that there is nothing better than celebrating the bond between two people while bringing the whole community together for carnival.
