Comedian Rob Scheepers reflects on hosting PSV’s historic title celebrations

Share

“It feels wonderful to get used to this,” says Rob Scheepers, looking back with warmth on the celebrations surrounding PSV Eindhoven’s 27th league title. The Brabant comedian and dedicated supporter shared his experience of the club’s third consecutive championship.

Scheepers, 51, has been making audiences laugh for years as a columnist and performer. This spring, he is touring Brabant with his sold-out show, ‘Op z’n scherpst’. He was performing in Prinsenbeek when PSV secured a hard-fought injury-time victory against FC Utrecht. The following day, while at the Paaspop festival, he learned that a surprise draw for Feyenoord had officially made PSV the champions.

From fan to host

For Scheepers, presenting the official ceremony alongside actor Frank Lammers was a significant honour. He recalled standing in the Stadhuisplein as a young fan with friends, looking up at the players on the stage. Now, he stands on that same stage himself. While he admits that winning three titles in a row feels familiar, he insists that the feeling remains fantastic.

The presentation was largely improvised, with Scheepers and Lammers spending only five minutes reviewing the schedule before engaging with the crowd. Scheepers noted the seamless collaboration with Lammers, despite their different styles. While Lammers proudly wears his PSV shirt in Amsterdam, Scheepers prefers a more reserved approach, attending matches with his children in the Family Corner.

A growing fanbase

More than 100,000 fans joined the celebrations across the stadium, the parade route, and the city centre. Scheepers attributed the lack of major incidents to the “down-to-earth” nature of the local supporters. He noted a clear divide in the fanbase: long-term, older season-ticket holders in the stadium and a large, enthusiastic younger generation filling the city squares. He believes this shows great potential for the club’s plans to expand the stadium capacity to 60,000.

The afterparty

The celebrations concluded with a relaxed event at the restaurant De Verlenging, attended by players, staff, and management. Scheepers observed that even a brief season analysis by director Marcel Brands was quickly overtaken by the crowd’s cheers. He believes this approachable atmosphere is unique to PSV compared to rival clubs.

As for the future, the comedian is already looking ahead. He noted that his friends from the Randstad have been uncharacteristically quiet this year, seemingly accepting the new reality of PSV’s dominance. Scheepers has already been approached by the organisers for next spring and has cleared his schedule for April 2027.
