Consumers’ Association price survey: egg prices reach record highs

Share

Egg prices in the Netherlands have reached a record high, according to new figures from the Consumers’ Association. The organisation surveyed the thirteen largest supermarket chains and found a 38 percent price increase over the past five years.

The study took place shortly before the Iran War. The association says prices had already been rising for a long period. Bird flu has reduced supply and pushed prices up. Outbreaks have also narrowed the price gap between barn-raised and free-range eggs. Free-range hens often stay indoors for months because of mandatory confinement.

In February, barn eggs cost an average of €0.35 each. Free-range eggs averaged €0.37, and organic eggs €0.43. The association also found that six‑egg cartons often offered the lowest price per egg. In some cases, they were cheaper than larger packs. Aldi, Dirk, Lidl, Nettorama, and Vomar sold the most affordable eggs, with prices as low as €0.24 per egg when converted.
