The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) — (Nederlandse Voedsel- en Warenautoriteit) — has received dozens of reports concerning recalled baby and infant food from Danone and Nestlé. A spokesperson for the authority confirmed that these reports come from parents whose children have fallen ill and who suspect a connection to the food.
The recalled batches may contain cereulide, a toxic substance that can cause vomiting and diarrhoea. While the NVWA states it is not yet certain that the reported illnesses were caused by the products, it acknowledges this is a possibility for the specific batches involved.
Last week, Danone recalled a limited number of batches in the Netherlands, following similar actions in other countries. Nestlé also issued a recall for its baby food due to the potential presence of the same toxin.
In addition to the products already flagged, the NVWA has received 13 reports of other baby and infant food products not included in the initial recall. These items are currently under investigation to ensure they are safe for consumption.
