Eindhoven Carnival: Lampegat lights up

Share

Eindhoven, known asย Lampegatย during the festivities, is one of the premier Carnival destinations in the Netherlands. Fromย Friday 13 to Tuesday 17 February 2026, the city transforms into a vibrant hub of music, parades, and local traditions. Whether you are a local or a first-time visitor, here is everything you need to know to navigate the “glowing” celebrations of 2026.

Top Party Locations

  • Dโ€™n Schuur (The Party Shed):ย Located on the square behind the Pullman Hotel (near the DelaDomus), this is Eindhovenโ€™s ultimate carnival hotspot. It hosts major events like the Childrenโ€™s Afternoon, the Farmersโ€™ Wedding (Boerenbruiloft), and the popular Music Bingo. Admission is free, making it the beating heart of the city centre.
  • The Salon on the Square (Wilhelminaplein):ย For a more traditional feel, head to the tent on Wilhelminaplein. Theย Salon op het Pleinย focuses on a cosy, “old-fashioned” atmosphere with live music and performances. It is particularly popular among an older audience seeking a classic Carnival experience.
  • The Market (De Markt):ย This central square caters to a younger, high-energy crowd. The large tent features well-known artists and DJs, while the surrounding pubs offer the perfect setting for a traditionalย hossย (carnival dance) and a drink.
  • Stratumseind:ย Known as the longest pub street in the Netherlands, Stratumseind becomes a party paradise during Carnival. With over 50 bars and clubs, youโ€™ll find everything from traditionalย Schlagersย to modern dance hits. It is the go-to spot for those who want to party until the early hours.

Key Traditions and Events

Eindhovenโ€™s Carnival is defined by a few must-see rituals:

  • The Key Handover (Friday):ย The mayor symbolically hands over the keys of the city to theย City Princeย at Dโ€™n Schuur, marking the official start of the festivities.
  • The Big Parade (Saturday, 14 Feb):ย The highlight of the weekend. A colourful procession of floats and music groups marches through the city centre starting at 13:11.
  • The Slogan:ย For 2026, the local motto is:ย Ge bent dur glowing atย (You are glowing there), reflecting Eindhovenโ€™s identity as the City of Light.

Practical Information for 2026

  • Dress Code:ย The official colours of Lampegat areย orange and blue. Most attendees wear a traditionalย pekske(costume) or a scarf in these colours.
  • Transport:ย Parking in the centre is extremely difficult and expensive. Visitors are strongly advised to useย public transport or bicycles.
  • The Deposit System:ย Most tents and venues now use a deposit system for plastic glasses. You will likely pay a small fee or use a token for your first glass, which you can exchange when buying your next drink to reduce plastic waste.
  • Safety:ย Handle alcohol responsibly and keep the city clean by using the provided waste bins.
