Fontys’ new initiative to mitigate teacher shortfalls

Share

Primary education in the Netherlands faces a nationwide shortage of 7,700 full-time teachers, according to the national government. Fontys University of Applied Sciences in Eindhoven has launched a new training programme, “Pabo on the Job,” which started this Monday. It targets teaching assistants, support staff, and pedagogical employees already working in primary schools who want to qualify as teachers.

The programme allows participants to combine their current jobs with teacher training while maintaining their income. “Thanks to this learning path, they can combine their current job with the Pabo programme, while maintaining income,” Fontys said. It follows the work-learning principle: students stay employed by their schools and attend part-time Pabo classes—the Dutch qualification for primary school teaching.

The initiative was developed with primary schools. The first group includes more than 30 students, who will follow Fontys’s part-time Primary Education Teacher programme.
