Fuel prices reach highest level since late 2023

Share

Fuel prices in the Netherlands have climbed to their highest level since the autumn of 2023, according to UnitedConsumers data. The consumer collective suggests that the surge is a direct result of rising global oil prices and ongoing geopolitical instability.

The national recommended retail price for a litre of petrol currently stands at 2.285 euros, a level not seen since September 2023. Diesel prices have followed a similar trend, with the recommended price reaching 2.080 euros per litre, the highest since October 2023.

UnitedConsumers’ fuel expert, Derk Foolen, noted that the primary driver of the increase is the cost of crude oil. Prices have now surpassed $70 per barrel, compared to approximately $60 in December 2025. He warned that if global tensions and market uncertainties continue, these costs will be reflected quickly in recommended fuel prices.

While nationally recommended prices serve as a benchmark, individual petrol stations are not required to follow them. Consequently, actual pump prices can vary significantly. Unmanned stations typically offer lower rates than manned ones.

Mr Foolen observed that it is becoming increasingly difficult for manned stations to keep petrol prices below 2 euros per litre. He explained that final pump pricing is determined by various factors, including operating costs, the station’s location, and local competition.
