Hospitals on high alert following cyberattack on ChipSoft

Share

Several hospitals are closely monitoring developments after a cyberattack targeted software provider ChipSoft. The expertise centre Z-CERT alerted medical institutions about the breach. ChipSoft is a major supplier of electronic patient records, and its systems are integral to Dutch healthcare. Despite the threat, Rijnstate hospital in Arnhem reports that its data remains secure. The hospital has not experienced system disruptions, yet it proactively severed connections with GP systems as a precaution.

Regional responses to the threat

Similarly, Slingeland Ziekenhuis in Doetinchem has temporarily closed connections to other healthcare providers. Consequently, staff cannot currently send digital referrals or access patient files from other institutions. Meanwhile, Frisius MC confirmed that its Heerenveen location uses ChipSoft software but remains unaffected. The hospital assured patients that their data is safe, noting that its Leeuwarden branch operates on a different system entirely.

Continuity of patient care

In Amsterdam, Antoni van Leeuwenhoek also uses ChipSoft for patient records. However, the hospital reported no disruptions on Tuesday evening. All scheduled appointments, treatments, and admissions are proceeding as planned. In contrast, Tergooi MC in Hilversum chose to temporarily disable its patient portal, Mijn Tergooi. Furthermore, the hospital cut links to external services like Beter Dichtbij and Gezondheidsmeter until further notice.

Isolated systems and communication

Other institutions report even less impact due to their security setups. Franciscus in Rotterdam stated that its ChipSoft software runs in an isolated, highly secure environment. Therefore, patients can still safely access their records via MijnFranciscus. Similarly, Ziekenhuisgroep Twente (ZGT) found no evidence that the attack affected its systems in Almelo and Hengelo. Currently, the ChipSoft website remains offline, and neither the company nor Z-CERT was available for immediate comment.
