Carnival is a season of pure “fun and frolic” that can leave international residents feeling anything from amused to completely bewildered. Whether you decide to dive straight into the party or find yourself wondering about the “why” behind it all, News Brainport is here to help. We explore the unique peculiarities and traditions of Lampegat, the carnival name for Eindhoven, to guide you through the madness. During this festival, the “City of Light” temporarily discards its high-tech identity to become a whimsical village of jesters. Now, it is time to get your costume ready!
From Thursday, the City of Light transforms into (Lampegat) as Eindhoven begins its full-scale Carnival celebrations. Live music and festive marquees will appear across the city.
On Friday, the festivities officially start at Stadhuisplein with the 37th edition of (3 Uurkes Vurraf). While this event requires a ticket, the nearby Bavaria Bierhal offers free entry from Friday evening until Monday. A newer venue (D’n Schuur) will host various acts in a tent near the Paterskerk from Friday through to Tuesday.

Carnival parade
The annual parade begins on Saturday at 13:11. The procession moves from the Paterskerk via Emmasingel to Stadhuisplein. Spectators can enjoy decorated floats and catch a glimpse of the city prince, (stadsprins) Kantinus. Those wishing to continue the party can visit Stratumseind or Wilhelminaplein, while the SHAWTY outdoor festival at Catharinaplein offers an alternative for those seeking a break from traditional Carnival music.
Pun noted
Sunday focuses on younger participants, with children’s activities organised by Carnival associations throughout the city, from the Effenaar to Eeneind. During carnival weekend, the Effenaar music venue changes its name to the Effenar to host traditional singing and dancing. The music venue Effenaar drops the second “a” to become the Effenar. This is a pun on the local Eindhoven dialect words effe, meaning “for a moment” or “simply,” and nar, meaning “jester” or “fool.” It signals that the venue is shifting from a professional concert hall to a casual, lighthearted Carnival venue. For adults, the (Stropdas Kroegentocht) takes place on Stratumseind. Participants wear an official tie and attempt to visit every participating pub for a drink.
On Monday, (D’n Schuur) hosts (Lampegat Pride), a celebration that combines Carnival traditions with Pride events, featuring drag queens and musical performances. Visitors looking for a change of pace can head to Ketelhuisplein for a live radio programme. This event features classic Carnival hits and gives the public the chance to request their favourite songs.
