Tens of thousands of secondary school students will receive lessons on online sexuality and sexting over the coming week. At least 350 high schools are participating in the annual Week of Love, setting a new record for the event. Organised by Soa Aids Nederland, the initiative also examines how social media influences young people’s self-image.
The organisers note that discovering sexuality and forming relationships online has become increasingly normal for the 200,000 young people who become sexually active every year. While schools recognise the importance of providing high-quality education on these topics, they often lack the necessary resources or curriculum space. To address this, the Week of Love provides teachers with specific methods to help them deliver relational and sexual education effectively.
This year’s focus on digital safety and self-image differs from that of the previous event. Last year, the Week of Love concentrated on contraception and tackling misinformation. The current programme aims to help students navigate the modern digital landscape safely and confidently.
