The mental healthcare institution Phitaal has applied for a suspension of payment at the Limburg district court. Phitaal currently provides specialist care to more than 3,500 clients across ten treatment centres in the central and southern Netherlands, including Eindhoven. In cooperation with health insurers, all patient care is set to continue during this period.
The institution has struggled with financial deficits for a long time. These issues were worsened by a lack of contracts with several major health insurers, which prevented the organisation from resolving its structural shortages. Interim director Arina Kruithof stated that despite efforts to improve efficiency, the organisation could no longer survive independently.
At the end of 2025, Phitaal identified another healthcare provider willing to take over the business. However, this acquisition required a debt restructuring process that failed to gain the necessary support in time. An administrator has now been appointed to investigate the possibility of a restart.
For now, Phitaal’s 350 employees and practitioners will remain in their roles. Appointments for current clients will proceed as planned, as health insurers have agreed to work together to ensure no one is left without care.
Founded in Sittard in 2011, Phitaal specialises in treating patients who suffer from a combination of mental and physical health complaints. Its teams, consisting primarily of psychologists and physiotherapists, work alongside GPs and medical specialists. The organisation operates centres in several cities, including Eindhoven, Maastricht, Utrecht, and Nijmegen.
