State Forest Management (Staatsbosbeheer) has decided to close the Rulse Dijk between Geldrop and Heeze starting this Wednesday. The measure is intended to protect toads during their seasonal migration. While the road is closed to motor vehicles, the organisation confirms that cyclists and hikers may still use the route.
The closures are located at the Strabrechtseheideweg in Geldrop and Natuurpoort De Plaetse in Heeze. Over the coming weeks, the road will be shut between 17:00 and 08:00 to ensure that toads and other amphibians can cross safely.
Mild temperatures and recent rain have triggered the start of the migration. The animals are moving from the Strabrecht heath to breeding waters in the Kleine Dommel. In addition to toads, other species such as alpine newts and common frogs are also travelling to the area to lay their eggs.
