Around two thousand people demonstrated against the Iranian regime on Saturday afternoon at the Malieveld in The Hague. Music played as participants held protest signs with messages such as ‘Down with the Islamic Republic in Iran’ and ‘End the dictatorship in Iran’. Many carried the old Iranian flag — a green, white, and red banner with a lion holding a sword, which was used until 1979.
Protesters said they were pleased that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard had been placed on the European list of terrorist organisations earlier this week. “We no longer want an Islamic regime; their end has come. We are not descended from Islamists,” said MP Ulysse Ellian, whose father fled the Iranian regime.
Alongside the former Iranian flags, demonstrators also carried American and Israeli flags, with an American flag raised on the stage. Both the United States and Israel regard the Iranian government as a hostile regime. The protest took place amid heightened tensions between Iran and the US — a situation that has recently seen increased military presence in the region. By around 3:30 p.m., the first participants began to leave the Malieveld.
