United Airlines cancels flights due to sharply increased fuel prices

Share

United Airlines will cancel a significant number of flights that have become unprofitable due to sharply rising fuel prices. Chief executive Scott Kirby said the airline plans to reduce its capacity by about 5 percent in the short term.

Airlines are facing a new fuel crisis as the war in the Middle East pushes up costs. Jet fuel prices have roughly doubled since late February, while diversions and airspace restrictions are disrupting flight routes.

United is preparing for oil prices to reach $175 per barrel and does not expect them to fall below $100 per barrel before the end of 2027. However, Kirby noted that the situation may be less difficult.

He added that United expects to restore its full flight schedule in the autumn. The airline, he said, has a solid financial buffer, will continue investing, and does not plan any job cuts.
