The VVD has chosen to nominate only incumbent government officials and current members of parliament for positions in the new cabinet. David van Weel will return as Minister of Justice and Security, a role he held before moving to Foreign Affairs last summer.
Several other ministers are switching portfolios. Vincent Karremans moves from Economic Affairs to Infrastructure and Water Management, while Sophie Hermans leaves the Ministry of Climate and Green Growth to become the Minister of Health. Thierry Aartsen, the current State Secretary for Infrastructure, will take on the role of Minister of Employment and Participation.
The party’s three state secretaries also bring previous political experience. Eric van der Burg, who served as State Secretary for Asylum and Migration in the final Rutte cabinet, will move to Home Affairs and Kingdom Relations. Silvio Erkens will move to the Ministry of Agriculture, and Judith Tielen will transfer from Public Health to Education as a state secretary.
These appointments follow earlier announcements regarding the party’s top roles. Party leader Dilan Yeşilgöz will serve as Minister of Defence and Deputy Prime Minister. Current Defence Minister Ruben Brekelmans is expected to succeed her as the party leader in the House of Representatives. Finally, Eelco Heinen has been confirmed to remain in his current role as Minister of Finance.
