AI child abuse images on the rise

Share

The expertise centre Offlimits analysed nearly 239,000 images of child sexual abuse last year. Their annual report reveals that over 2,200 images were created using artificial intelligence. This represents a significant increase from 2024, when the organisation identified 1,470 such images.

Reporting and removal

The public can report suspicious content directly to Offlimits. Specialists then review these images to determine if they are illegal. If an image depicts child abuse, Offlimits sends a removal request to the hosting platform. In 2025, platforms removed the vast majority of this content. The organisation focuses its efforts on the public web, though material also circulates on the dark web.

Concerning victim trends

The report notes a growing trend of self-generated material created by children. This category accounted for over 39 per cent of all illegal images in 2025. Most of these children were girls under the age of 12. Overall, girls between the ages of 4 and 11 remain the most frequent victims of child sexual abuse.
