Train traffic to and from Amsterdam Central Station will be suspended entirely on Saturday, October 3. This is due to major maintenance and renovation works. Despite the closure, other railway stations in Amsterdam will remain operational. Train tickets will also be valid on the city’s metro network.
During the night, NS will run replacement buses between Schiphol Airport and Amsterdam Central, while rail services between Schiphol, Bijlmer ArenA and Utrecht will continue as normal.
Disruptions
Travellers should also brace for disruption and fewer trains on Sunday, October 4, and Monday, October 5. Heavy crowds are expected, particularly during peak commuting hours.
According to ProRail, the works mark a significant milestone in the ongoing modernisation of Amsterdam Central. Once completed, track 11a will be brought back into service, while track 14a will be permanently taken out of use.
The project involves both visible construction work and critical upgrades behind the scenes, including modifications to rail safety systems and traffic control installations. These technical adjustments require a complete shutdown of train operations for one day.
Expanding Capacity
As part of the redevelopment, the platform serving tracks 13 and 14 is being extended and staircases are being widened to improve passenger flow and increase capacity. The improvements are intended to accommodate the continued growth in passenger numbers expected over the coming years.
Amsterdam Central, the landmark station designed by architect Pierre Cuypers, first opened in 1889. The extensive renovation programme has been underway for several years and is expected to continue until around 2030.
