Battery storage becomes more attractive amid power price swings

Share

Storing electricity in batteries is becoming more attractive due to strong daily price fluctuations on the electricity market. This conclusion comes from Energieopwek.nl, a platform that closely tracks developments in the energy market.

According to calculations by Energieopwek.nl, electricity production from renewable sources was more than 11 per cent higher in the first quarter than in the same period last year.

“The effect of renewable energy generation on prices became very clear this quarter,” energy experts said. “During peak demand in the morning and early evening, fossil fuel generation still has to play a major role.” This leads to higher prices at those times. “Due to the Iran war, prices during peak periods are now much higher. When the supply of renewable energy is greater, electricity is far cheaper.”

Storing cheaper electricity from periods of high renewable output and using it during peak demand can reduce the need for expensive purchases.

Overall, 54 per cent of electricity came from renewable sources such as wind and solar, plus 8 per cent from biomass. Last year, renewables accounted for 47 per cent of total electricity generation.
