The BBB will also refuse to support the cabinet’s budget in the Senate unless the government changes its nitrogen plans. Senate group leader Ilona Lagas repeated comments made earlier by party leader Henk Vermeer in the House of Representatives.
With 12 seats, the BBB is a key player in the Senate if the cabinet wants to secure support from parties on the right. During the General Political Debate, Lagas criticised the plans put forward by Agriculture Minister Jaimi van Essen (D66).
“It is a substantial reduction of the livestock population without the guarantee that the permit granting process will get underway afterwards,” she said.
The cabinet has previously stated that it does not intend to weaken the nitrogen measures. PRO has said it would not support the budget if Van Essen’s plans were significantly altered.
Lagas said her party would not automatically back the budget if the nitrogen plans were withdrawn or amended. She also expressed concerns about the cabinet’s economic proposals and said she disagreed with its energy policy.
