Cash is making a modest comeback in the eurozone. According to a survey by the European Central Bank, about ninety‑two percent of businesses with physical locations still accept cash. This is an increase of roughly ninety percent two years ago. The ECB suggests this may mark a shift after years of declining cash acceptance during and after the pandemic.
The survey also highlights how quickly phone‑based payments are spreading. In 2024, just over a third of entrepreneurs supported mobile payments. This year, that figure has jumped to nearly seven in ten. Card payments remain the norm as well, with almost nine out of ten businesses accepting them, a slight increase compared to two years ago.
The ECB gathered responses from more than 8,200 entrepreneurs across 21 eurozone countries, including shops, restaurants, cafés, hotels, cultural venues, and leisure businesses.
