There is a chance that the country will record an official heatwave next week, which would be the second of this year. Midway through the week, temperatures are expected to rise sharply again. According to Buienradar, maximum temperatures of up to 35 degrees or even higher are conceivable on Thursday.
Tropical
Weeronline also reports a strong chance of tropical temperatures above 30 degrees on Wednesday. If that happens, the Netherlands may record the fifth regional heatwave and the second official heatwave of 2026. Temperatures will already begin climbing over the weekend, with inland areas expected to reach 30 to 32 degrees on Sunday. Buienradar describes the coming days as a “very summery weekend”.
How are heatwaves measured?
An official heatwave is determined in De Bilt. To qualify, temperatures must reach at least 25 degrees for five consecutive days, with at least three of those days reaching 30 degrees or more. The first official heatwave of the year occurred in June and lasted twelve days. Regionally, several heatwaves have already been recorded this summer.
Short dip
On Monday and Tuesday, temperatures will briefly drop before rising sharply again. Buienradar notes that the wind will shift to an easterly direction, allowing another wave of warm air to reach the Netherlands. The weather service adds that it is not yet clear how far temperatures will “shoot up” later in the week.
Drought concerns
Despite the warm spell, drought problems are far from over. Weeronline states that significant rainfall is not expected in the near future. KNMI forecasts very warm and dry conditions in about a week, although the chance of less warm and wetter weather increases from the weekend onwards.
