Children can travel for free on public transport across the Netherlands

Children aged 4 to 11 will be able to travel free on public transport throughout the Netherlands from next year when accompanied by an adult. The measure was announced by DOVA, the partnership of provinces and regional authorities responsible for public transport policy.

Free travel for children already applies on trains and in some regions. The new arrangement extends the benefit to all buses, trams and metro services nationwide.

According to DOVA, the change will create “one clear and recognisable scheme for children throughout public transport”.

The organisation also announced that the nationwide discount available to people aged 65 and over on buses, trams and metros will end on 1 January next year.
