Just over 13,700 new-build homes were finished in the first three months of the year. This is about 1,800 fewer than the same time last year. The drop is even bigger when compared to the end of 2025, when nearly 22,800 new homes were built. These figures come from Statistics Netherlands (CBS).
Overall, the total number of homes in the country grew by about 13,400 in the first quarter. While 2,800 homes were pulled down and another 2,400 were lost due to building changes, around 4,800 homes were created by converting older buildings.
On the bright side, building permits were approved for nearly 23,500 new homes. This is a big jump from the 18,700 permits approved in early 2025, though it is slightly lower (by about 900) than the previous quarter.
Commercial properties
It was also a strong quarter for businesses, with building permits approved for nearly 5,200 new commercial buildings—about 1,100 more than last year. Around 4,200 new commercial properties were actually completed during this time.
Permits for around 700 new homes were cancelled during the first quarter of 2026.
