A limited number of Revolut customers were affected by a recent fraud attempt targeting the online bank. An unauthorised party used the email address of what Revolut described as “a legitimate government agency” to submit fraudulent requests for customer information.

A Revolut spokesperson confirmed the incident after an investigation by BNR Nieuwsradio.

According to BNR, Revolut also provided data relating to Dutch customers to cybercriminals. The broadcaster said it had reviewed information that included payment account details, verification photographs and copies of identity documents.

Revolut said it could not yet disclose how many customers were affected or provide further details about the data involved.

The online bank said customer funds were not compromised and that its systems were not breached during the incident.

Revolut added that it had “immediately” blocked the email address used in the fraud attempt. The bank said it had also contacted affected customers to inform them about the incident and offer support.
