Food watchdog Foodwatch is urging Efteling to stop offering unlimited soft drink refills. The organisation says it has recently received several reports and complaints from visitors who feel the amusement park’s refill concept, D’n Dorstlesser, encourages excessive sugar consumption.
At Efteling, visitors can buy a reusable cup for 17 euros and refill it throughout the day at various tap points. “With this system, you can easily drink more calories from soft drinks in one day than your entire daily energy requirement, without eating a single bite”, says Liz Kunst, campaigner at Foodwatch.
Efteling responds that it provides not only sugary drinks but also sugar-free options. “Visitors can also choose to fill their cup with plain water”, a spokesperson says. She adds that the park only learned of Foodwatch’s criticism through the organisation’s website. According to her, there has been no direct contact. “We find that unfortunate, because we would have liked to talk”.
Foodwatch has repeatedly raised concerns about soft drink promotion at Efteling. For example, until last year, the Efteling Hotel featured a Coca-Cola suite, which the organisation also opposed.
