For the eighth time this year, the Netherlands has experienced a regionally very hot day with temperatures reaching 35 degrees or more. Weather platform weeronline reports this to be a new record. The previous high was seven such days, seen in 2020.
On Thursday, the thermometer climbed past 35°C at several locations, particularly in the south of the country. It has never been this hot on August 13 before. The old record of 34.9 degrees, measured in 2024 in Nieuw‑Beerta (Groningen), has now been surpassed. Weeronline notes that hitting 35°C used to be a rarity in the last century. Since 2000, the KNMI has already recorded forty‑nine extremely hot days. This is twice as many as in the entire century before.
Friday is expected to bring more intense heat, potentially pushing the record even further to nine days. After that, temperatures are forecast to drop.
