The city of Eindhoven can now begin construction on a major underground bicycle storage facility beneath the Stationsplein — the main square at Eindhoven Central Station. A recent ruling by the Council of State has dismissed all objections to the project, allowing the development to proceed. The new facility will have the capacity to store 5,400 bicycles.
The legal challenge was brought forward by the Beter Eindhoven Foundation. The group questioned the project’s safety data and the methods used to assess risks within the busy station area. They also argued that the municipality had failed to share all relevant project information in a timely and transparent manner. However, the Council of State rejected these claims, stating that the original decision to build the cellar remains valid.
The project has been planned since late 2022. Due to the three-year delay caused by these legal proceedings, the total development costs have increased. To prevent further setbacks, the municipality has already begun selecting a contractor.
Construction is scheduled to start after the summer. The work will begin at the facility entrance, followed by phased construction of the basement area beneath the square.
