Kitty Jong has been elected as the new chair of Progressive Netherlands (PRO). The former vice-chair of the FNV trade union emerged as the winning candidate following an online ballot of party members, in which around 39,000 members participated.
Jong won the leadership contest against two high-profile candidates: Michiel Servaes, a former Labour Party (PvdA) MP who currently leads charity Oxfam Novib, and Frank van de Wolde, founder of RoodGroen and a key figure behind the unification of the PvdA and GroenLinks.
The announcement follows the confirmation earlier this month that Mariëtte Hamer, former chair of the Social and Economic Council (SER), will serve as PRO’s lead candidate for the Senate. Members formally endorsed Hamer’s nomination in an uncontested vote during the same referendum.
