Natural gas is being used more often by power producers to balance fluctuations in solar and wind energy output and help maintain a secure electricity supply. According to Gasunie, gas transport to power plants increased by 12% during the first six months of the year. This marks the third consecutive year in which deliveries to power producers have risen in the first half of the year.
In its half-year report, Gasunie called for continued investment in a reliable, affordable and sustainable energy system. It said recent developments had highlighted the need for this approach. The network operator pointed to several factors, including the war involving Iran, which is disrupting gas supplies from the Middle East.
Gasunie is also expanding Dutch LNG capacity. Chief Executive Officer Willemien Terpstra said the investment is important for energy security.
“Expanding the capacity to receive liquefied natural gas strengthens the resilience of our energy system in a world that has once again become more unpredictable,” Terpstra said.
