A group of 32 mudflat walkers were brought safely ashore on Sunday morning. They got into difficulty on the mudflats near Ameland.
They took final eight people aboard a rescue boat at around 08:30 and transported them to the island. The group had earlier sent out a distress call. According to a spokesperson for the regional safety authority it is still unclear what exactly went wrong.
The Dutch Coast Guard launched a large rescue operation at around 06:45, involving several rescue boats, a helicopter and private vessels.
Authorities initially reported that 34 walkers were involved, but later confirmed there were 32 participants and one guide.
