Hermans advises mosquito nets for West Nile

People should sleep under a mosquito net if they have one, according to Health Minister Sophie Hermans, offering advice on how to prevent West Nile virus infections. Her comments follow news last week of nine new cases and a rise in the death toll to three, with Hermans noting that those who died were older people with underlying health conditions.

The VVD minister emphasised that the only way to avoid the virus is by protecting yourself against mosquitoes, which contract it after feeding on infected birds. Beside using mosquito nets, Hermans advised people to keep a close eye on any insects flying around their homes.

She added that her ministry’s role is focused on alerting healthcare providers to the symptoms, with guidance sent directly to general practitioners and regional health services (GGDs). A wider public information campaign is not currently considered necessary.
