Around 800 cleaners are taking part in a week of strikes organised by trade union FNV, according to a union spokesperson. FNV launched five days of industrial action on Monday to protest against the collective labour agreement agreed between employers’ organisation Schoonmakend Nederland and trade union CNV.
Monday marked the first day of the strike. FNV board member Caroline Lamberts said most cleaners at Schiphol Airport joined the action. She also reported “widespread strikes” at major railway stations across the country.
Schiphol said on Tuesday that it is monitoring the situation throughout the day. The airport, together with cleaning companies, is continuing to provide services as much as possible. A spokesperson said the situation remains “manageable for the time being”.
Lamberts previously said that about 10 per cent of all cleaners are members of FNV. According to Schoonmakend Nederland, the cleaning sector employs around 120,000 people.
