The Examination Board (CvTE) cancelled around seven hundred final exams at twelve special secondary education schools on Friday because of the extreme heat. The board will set new dates.
These cancellations affect oral state exams for vulnerable pupils at special secondary schools across the Netherlands. Around three hundred exam supervisors normally run these assessments.
A CvTE spokesperson said the board cancelled the exams to prevent examiners and candidates from travelling in the severe heat.
Alain van de Haar, managing director of Sectorraad-go, which represents special education schools, supported the decision. “It is, of course, extremely frustrating for students that they will now be taking longer to complete their exams. We should remember that officials issued Code Red only a day earlier. At some other schools, students were off due to the heat, so it doesn’t make sense to administer exams then.”
The CvTE has not yet confirmed new exam dates. Oral assessments at other special secondary schools will continue in the coming weeks, so exam supervisors cannot step in immediately. The spokesperson said the board aims to reschedule the exams “as soon as possible”.
The Sector Council‑GO also expects a quick solution. “It involves a very committed group of teachers who supervise these exams, so I have no doubt that they can find a solution quickly,” Van de Haar said.
