UTRECHT (ANP) – The international train from the Netherlands to Berlin will run via Hamburg starting in October. This is partly due to prolonged maintenance work on the current route between Hanover and Berlin, reports NS. The ICE train will take an hour longer to reach the German capital and will run only four times a day instead of five.
However, the ICE will continue to run to Hanover three times a day. But that will be the final destination. Currently, travellers wishing to go to Hamburg must change trains in Osnabrück, but that will soon no longer be necessary.
Bremen will also be added to the new route to Berlin in mid-December. The travel time from Amsterdam to Berlin will be approximately 7 hours.
The new route will be used at least until the end of next year. Whether the old timetable will return after that is not yet known. That will depend partly on the popularity of Hamburg and Bremen. According to NS International Director Heike Luiten, the North German cities have been on the train operator’s wish list for a long time.
