IKEA plans to open several smaller stores across the Netherlands next year. A spokesperson for the furniture retailer confirmed this following a report by AD. The new locations will offer a selection of products, including tableware, lighting, and other home accessories.
The compact stores will range between 2,000 and 2,500 square meters. In comparison, IKEA’s existing large-format stores in the Netherlands typically cover between 35,000 and 40,000 square meters. Due to their smaller footprint, the new stores will not feature the traditional IKEA showroom or self-service warehouse.
The first of the new locations are expected to open in the middle of next year. While IKEA has not disclosed the exact number of stores, the expansion is expected to involve around five new branches.
IKEA currently operates thirteen large stores across the Netherlands, but the retailer has identified areas where customers face longer travel times to reach an existing branch.
