Increasing meter-cupboard fires: Here’s why, and what to check

Dutch home meter cupboards are catching fire roughly three times a week, up from around two a few years ago. That’s according to Krado, a consultancy that tracks home electrical incidents on behalf of the grid-operator association: it recorded roughly 106 meter-cupboard incidents in 2021, a figure that had climbed to around 176 by 2025. The Netherlands Institute for Public Safety (NIPV) has flagged the same upward trend.

Fire and electrical safety experts say the cause is not on faulty wiring alone. It’s the growing list of power-hungry equipment being plugged into fuse boxes. These are known in Dutch as the ‘meterkast’ or ‘groepenkast’. In an average home, these units were installed decades ago and for a very different kind of household.

Struggling fuse boxes

A typical Dutch meter cupboard is designed around simple appliances that draw power in short bursts – a washing machine, kettle and a few lights. Heat pumps, EV chargers, solar-panel inverters and home batteries don’t work that way. They pull substantial current for hours at a stretch. Older ‘groepenkasten’ were never engineered for that kind of sustained load. When they are pushed past their limits, wiring and components can overheat.

Electrical engineering experts explain the differences as follows: appliances like washing machines finish their job quickly, while a heat pump can draw power continuously for as long as it’s running. That steady current heats the cupboard itself, and if the enclosure can’t shed that heat, the risk of fire increases.

Another related point of attention is the installation and maintenance of a fuse box. This is because a home’s entire power supply is routed through one cupboard; its condition effectively sets the baseline for the whole house’s fire risk.

The real problem

Part of what’s driving the increase, installers say, is fragmentation. A kitchen renovator wires in new appliances, a separate contractor fits the solar panels, and later on someone else adds an EV charger. This often leads to a situation where no single professional is accountable and also checks if the meter cupboard can still handle everything connected to it. The common shortcut is simply adding another circuit rather than reassessing the box. In practice, that results in loose or undersized wiring and overcrowded cupboards.

What homeowners can do?

Before adding a heat pump, EV charger or larger solar setup:

Have the whole system assessed, not just extended. It is worth having the entire fuse box evaluated and, if necessary, upgraded. Instead of simply bolting on another circuit.
Use a certified installer and check whether an electrician holds ‘zegelrecht’. This is the official authorisation that allows a recognised installer to break the grid operator’s seal on the meter cupboard. Holding that credential is a reasonable indicator of competence.

Right now, regardless of any upgrade plans: Insurance provider Interpolis has a simpler warning to keep the meter cupboard free of household clutter. Umbrellas, boxes and other stored items give a fire more fuel to burn and spread through.

For homeowners investing in solar panels, heat pumps or EV chargers as part of the broader shift toward sustainable energy, the message from installers is straightforward: treat the meter cupboard as part of the upgrade, not an afterthought.
