Jetten: Energy support measures shouldn’t stall government investment

Share

Prime Minister Rob Jetten has dismissed the idea of postponing the Cabinet’s planned investments, despite the economic instability triggered by the conflict in the Middle East. He noted that government departments are currently more effective than ever at securing funding for critical areas such as national security and innovation. According to the Prime Minister, the current global climate only reinforces the need to push forward with these strategic goals.

Speaking at a press conference following the Cabinet meeting, Jetten warned that halting these projects would be a mistake. “It is precisely this turbulent world that shows how important it is to continue with this,” he argued, adding that failing to invest now would only lead to a higher price for the country to pay in the coming years.

However, the Cabinet faces mounting pressure to provide financial relief to households as fuel prices soar due to Middle Eastern unrest. The Spring Memorandum, published on Friday, highlights that fiscal breathing room is exceptionally tight, particularly for the upcoming year. This budget squeeze is largely attributed to the high-reaching ambitions already set out in the coalition agreement, leaving the government with a difficult balancing act between immediate support and long-term investment.
