DE BILT (ANP) – A regional tropical night has been recorded for the eighth time this year. According to calculations by the KNMI, the temperature in Vlissingen did not drop below 20.9 degrees for 24 hours. A tropical night is defined as one where the temperature does not fall below 20 degrees.
It was not only in Vlissingen that the temperature remained above 20 degrees during the night from Friday to Saturday. The weather station in Maastricht recorded a minimum temperature of 20.4 degrees.
The first tropical night of the year was recorded on the night of June 24 to 25. At that time, the temperature in Vlissingen did not drop below 22 degrees. The tropical night with the highest minimum temperature ever recorded was in July 2018 in Deelen, Gelderland. The temperature there did not drop below 24.4 degrees. Since the start of measurements in 1901, there have been an average of 1.3 tropical nights per year.
Warm days
An official tropical night in the Netherlands is defined as one in which the temperature in Dae Bilt does not drop below 20 degrees. This last occurred in 2020.
There have never been as many consecutive warm days as in 2026, Weeronline further reports. On Saturday, the temperature in Dae Bilt rose above 20 degrees for the 61st consecutive day, the requirement for a warm day. The previous record stood at 60 days in 2018. The weather bureau expects the number of warm days to increase even further in the coming week.
Since June 1, 66 warm days have already been recorded in Dae Bilt. That is as many as normally occurs in the entire meteorological summer, which lasts until August 31. The number of warm days could therefore rise even further. In total, there will already be 82 warm days in 2026, including the spring.
